Singing and Tennis are hits for Julia Moriaty
Tennis and songwriting – joint passions for 24-year-old Sydney based Julia Moriarty.
Winning an increasing number of fans on and off the court.
Aboriginal tennis player Julia Moriarty has started the 2013 season in winning style with victory in the City of Charles Sturt AMT tournament, at West Lakes in Adelaide.
It was a 15-hundred dollar pay day for Julia who holds joint Irish and Australian citizenship. through her paternal grandfather.
Julia defeated Taylor and Ashleigh Capannolo, Chloe Hule and Cahill.
Home base is currently Sydney, where she is coached by Ken Richardson.
Julia took up tennis at the age of 11.
She was staying at a friend’s house and went with her to a tennis camp where she unexpectedly discovered her passion for the game.
Her tennis idols include Rafael Nadal and Kim Clijsters, and current women’s world number 4 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.
Away from tennis Julia enjoys literature and writing , and is doing a double degree in Arts and Law at the University of new England.
She hopes to eventually work in one of those fields or as a diplomat.
Her parents John and Ros founded the Aboriginal graphic design company, that provided the colourful Aboriginal artworks covering Qantas planes.
John Moriarty was also the first Aboriginal to be selected for the Socceroos.
Julia (pictured above with Wally Masur) is currently ranked 756 in the world in singles and 691 in women’s doubles, having won her first doubles tour title in America last year.
She also made the final of a 50 thousand dollar doubles event in Japan three years ago.
Another of Julia’s passions is music …. having written around 35 songs.
She hopes to eventually have them published, and is keen to write a song for an established artist.
Her musical tastes range from Beyonce, to Taylor Swift, and country music.
Julia has performed cover versions of songs by artists including Pink, Adele and Missy Higgins, and has built an impressive library of her own songs
As for her tennis … Julia wants to continue honing her game, working hard, and to become the best tennis player she can.
She has yet to meet her idol Nadal, but admires his tenacity, and the way he plays every single shot and point.
Julia has two brothers, but is the only one of the Moriarty siblings to take up professional sport.
